“COloric” crescendo

“Coloric” Crescendo
All St. Gallery, 77 E 3rd St., New York, NY
October 26 - October 31, 2026

“coloric” - the artist’s process of immersing his canvas or board in various media to achieve a coalescence of materiality and texture
crescendo - a gradual increase in volume, force, or intensity

“Coloric” Crescendo brings together J.Bonegard’s latest works, which encapsulate a methodology he established in 2023 involving the systematic layering of found materials, textiles, twine, and acrylic paint.

The artist describes his “coloric” effect as an intense working of the surface through an energetic immersion in media—paint, twine, fabric, bottle caps, and other materials—fused on the board to produce a richly textured finish. This gestural approach is only complete once he completes a reduction of the very elements previously applied: pulling away caps, scalping impastoed hills of paint, and untying networks of twine.

Alongside his processual approach to artmaking — a philosophical exploit driven by whimsy, chance, and spirituality — is a keen awareness of the serendipity of music. Each painterly composition can be seen as an escalating ballad, with notes building upon the next, increasing in volume and often in complexity, before reaching a climactic moment. Meticulously wrought, these works illustrate the less-defined elements of the human condition - the joy, pleasure, sorrow, and solemnity that resist easy representation.

J. Bonegard is a Boston-based visual artist who has spent the past several years exploring the complexities of art perception and interpretation of dreams through abstract painting, sculpture, and performance art. As a storyteller and former orthopedic surgeon, he creates works that reflect the depth of his life experiences, paired with a rigorous, methodical approach that mirrors his surgical background.
